in Lansing.
1) Training session:
--------------------
a) "Network Training"
o What is a Layered network
o Why will we need "Gateways"
o What is a HamGate http://www.fuller.net/Gateways/
o What is NetROM (X1J4) http://www.larc.unl.edu/packet/using.net.html
NETROM, when powered up, sends out a HELLO packet that identifies itself to the
world that it exists. It also sends out its Route Table to its neighbor nodes, who
then add their route table information and pass the route table on to their neighbors.
In this way NetROM *learns* the routes to a large number of nodes making it easy
for users to simply enter the name of the node closest to their desired destination
and get *automatically* routed their.
NetROM is a ROM that can be plugged into any TNC-2 compatable TNC. It is also
supported in MYSYS and JNOS.
b) Demo a live Packet connection to nodes & hosts around the State.
Particularly demonstrating use of HamGates, KA-node,
NetROM and simple PBBS's.
Show how to "crawl" through the network and build a map as you
do it!.
(editors note: the live demo never happened as meeting time was spent in Multi-layered network and NetROM training)
2) Working Group Reports:
-------------------------
o Networking
New district maps are now on the MI-DRG.org from Districts 7 & 8 West
Each District is to assign a "Mapmaker"
A map of the Proposed "Local Access Frequencies by District" is displayed on MI-DRG.
There was lively discussion regarding packed vs. Repeater use of frequencies.
Some felt that there would be some interferance with existing Repeater frequencies
just 20 khz away from assigned packet frequencies. It is the responsibility
of the local organizations to use engineering controls such as notch cavities
to reject unwanted radiation.
How are we progressing in the deployment?
Slowly...
Network Training documentation
A work in progress...
Each District is to assign an ADEC in charge of "Network"
(skipped)
o Frequency Coordination http://www.mi-drg.org/wg-freq-coord.shtml
We must know what's out there...so help the DRG update the database!
Work progressing on an SQL database of the raw data
Will the MARC still recognize the legacy Packet freqs
and does it matter
o Operational Standards: See Attachments.
District "Standards", are we ready to commit?
Publish "living documents" on website
3-Letter County designators (two formats)
http://www.mi-drg.org/std-3letter-abbrev.shtml
It was discussed to use the 3-letter designators that are used by the State LEIN system.
(ed note: It was later learned that the LEIN system no longer uses these codes)
o Training
Basic Packet Training (on website)
http://www.choisser.com/packet/
Network Training (under development)
A work in progress...
3) Go around the room answering:
--------------------------------
"What is the status of my Districts network?"
District 3 ?. Telpac NODE and Pactor at RedCross Building.
MSYS in BayCity KC8QMH
Looking for an ALMA link.
District 5 ?.. Six Hospitals have antennas and D Star 2200 radios
A new Digi has been added in Branch Co.
District 7 ?.. Alpena EOC has packet equipment capable of connecting through TAWAS.
District 8 East One NODE in Alger and a Gateway in Manistique.
4) Packet "Go-Kit" Show-n-Tell:
-------------------------------
See Attachments for those who couldn't attend.
5) Misc:
--------
o Need to collect EOC Callsigns, Aliases, & Frequencies
Would like to have ALL data by the END of JANUARY.
o Please add your node data to the Node Database (via webpage)
Nothing to build maps from if we don't have the data!
District 1 ...... http://www.mi-drg.org/D1-Network-map.shtml
District 2....... http://www.mi-drg.org/D2-Network-map.shtml
District 3....... http://www.mi-drg.org/D3-Network-map.shtml
District 5....... http://www.mi-drg.org/D5-Network-map.shtml
District 6....... http://www.mi-drg.org/D6-Network-map.shtml
District 7....... http://www.mi-drg/DRG-District-7-Packet improved-map.doc
District 8....... http://www.mi-drg.org/D8-Network-map.shtml
o Need more participation in the Working Groups!
o Need more participation on the DRG mailing list!!!!
The reflector/list is little more than an easy way of
addressing 33 members by simply typing in the list address,
instead of all 33 addresses.
DRG List includes: Reps, DEC's, & some Section Staff
"Participate! Or Jay will Dictate!"
o Need LEADERS for each of the Working Groups
Hold regular work sessions
Discuss issues via the email list(s)
Hold "Network WG" meeting in Ann Arbor (WCC campus)
o What date?
6) The next DRG Meeting will be at the RedCross facility in Lansing.
7) Set "Action Items"
----------------------
o Node Database updates!!!
o Each District develop an "Operations Plan for Packet"
Each District develop and Publish their own Network Maps
Each District provide updates for the EOC database
Begin migration to the new frequencies & build Gateways
=== End ===
